Shopping for digital camcorders can be quite a task these days with all the features and abbreviations, it’s information overload standing there in the camera department of the store. Of course, you want a camera that meets your own needs, so there are a lot of things to think about before making a final decision.

Zoom is one of the first things to consider when choosing your camera. There are two types of zoom, digital and optical. Lots of digital zoom may sound great, but the higher the digital zoom the blurry the output will be and your picture will become pixilated.

Optical zoom, on the other hand, allows you to zoom in on your subject without losing picture clarity. The two types of zoom are not always clearly explained on the manufacturer’s description of the product. Bear this in mind and pay close attention to the specific zoom details. If you’re not sure ask for some assistance in finding the information about the camera you’re looking at.

Another important detail you might want to think about is the size of the camera. Everything seems to be getting smaller and smaller these days. There are even camcorders that fit in your shirt pocket. A small camera may be easy to toss in your bag and carry around, but is it really the best camera for you? Sometimes the smaller cameras can actually be more difficult to hold and maneuver than a large camera. Try different models and sizes and see what is most comfortable for you. Make sure you can easily reach the function buttons without shaking the camera.

Since you’re recording video footage instead of still pictures you’re going to want to take sound into consideration as well. Does the camcorder you’re looking at have a good microphone? A general rule of thumb is to look for a front mounted microphone to pick up the sound quality. Depending on how technical you want to get, there’s also audio zoom features which will pick up audio further away as you visually zoom into something.

Overall, there are many things to consider before buying a camcorder. You’ll also want to look at batteries and lighting. Can you add additional lighting if needed? How long will the battery last? Do you need a specific size carrying case? Take your time, compare, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
