This was a decade when you could purchase many figures and toys that were characters of both film and television fame; Indiana Jones, fraggles, Ewoks and Smurfs to mention just a few. But which ones are you prepared to admit to owning? Would you brazen it out with knowledge of your Knight Rider Kitt car or cringe with embarrassment at the mere mention of the Huff?
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and his female counterpart, She-Ra are to be remembered with pride. But Mutant Ninja Teenage Turtles, I am not so sure about. The turtle heroes were extremely popular and many a bandana was worn with pride so who am I to judge! Thunder Cats were fantastic toys to own and play with and the television theme theme tune was pretty fabulous too!
The 1980′s saw the dawn of computer heaven. Companies such as Atari were just getting going and went on the produce the very popular Atari 2600 video consoles. It was also the era when computer viruses were first written. The very first was by a fifteen year old High School Student. I wonder what he went on to do with his life. I hope he turned his skills to good use!
Girl’s toys that were around in the 1980′s included My Little Pony and Sylvanian Families. Both of these could become part of a collection to be treasured. Sylvanian Families are still in production and can be easily purchased online. For little ones, there was a very strange range of dolls called Cabbage Patch Kids that were funny looking babies that were supposed to have been born in a cabbage patch. They were definitely designed more for the American market that the British.
For the more nerdy kids, Dungeons and Dragons was a game produced in the 1970′s that increasing in popularity in the 1980′s. Games Workshop ,now a huge retail chain, was then just getting going producing whole fantasy worlds and battles for table top games. They are still going strong today, although they market themselves as a hobby rather than toy shop. If you wanted to enter a larger sized world of figures, then He-Man and the Maters of the Universe might have caught your eye. There was also a female counterpart called She-Ra.
